ReadingOur reading program targets students' challenges in reading decoding and reading comprehension skills. Students with significant challenges in reading decoding skills engage in daily comprehensive and targeted exercises. Students are taught by specially trained special educators.
WritingWriting forms an integral part of our daily academic exercises. In order to access the general education curriculum and demonstrate grade level proficiency, students need to engage in clear and direct writing activities. Creating a written product with details resulting in a five paragraph essay is a basic requirement for students at this level. Students with challenges in written expression have a difficult time generating ideas for well organized paragraph. Our program helps students to develop the skills in written expression through specifically tiered instruction by a special educator trained in the delivery of the program.
MathOur Math program is closely aligned with our Common Core curriculum expectations. Our math teachers are experts in the field and employ evidence based strategies to helping students with mild to significant math challenges. Our aim is to prepare these students so that they are able to join their non-disabled peers in the math regular education classroom. Progress monitoring for students served in the resource math classroom is done through the use of a number of assessment tools. Our school participates in our districtwide math assessment, iReady. Students engage in many support activities including online digital programs to which they can have access even when they are not in the formal classroom. Throughout our programs, students have access to ipads and the latest technology tools to support and expand their learning opportunities. I-Ready is our number one data capturing tool for students within our resource classroom. It helps us to determine rate of progress for each student as well as provide us with information on how well students are managing grade level curriculum math skills.

In Class Resource (ICR)
Our In Class Resource (ICR) classes form a critical part of our inclusion practices. Students with disabilities are served in these classrooms with the rest of their peers in a setting that promotes positive social climate. Teachers have high expectations for these students and they are all included in regular testing exercises given through district wide and statewide assessment tools. The practices that are recommended by Common Core are part of the academic environment in which students with disabilities participate on a regular basis. Accommodations and teaching strategies are some of the tools used to help students to access the regular curriculum so that they are provided with equal opportunities to engage and achieve grade level proficiency before leaving for high school. The expectations for students with disabilities are the same for students without disabilities.
In the ICR classrooms, co-teaching/cooperative/collaborative teaching exercises form part of the norm. Students have access to two teachers within the ICR classroom. Although the law stipulates that these students be taught by one of these teachers certified in the area, our classrooms often see both teachers certified to teach the subject - Language Arts or Math. In all our ICR classrooms, one of these teachers is certified in teaching students with exceptionalities/gifts and talents while the other is certified in the subject matter that they teach. Today, the ICR classroom may have both teachers dual certified, This has added to the value of the teaching and learning exercises in these classrooms. Ligon is known for its commitment to serving students with diverse backgrounds, challenges, and gifts and talents.

Accommodations
Accommodations for students with disabilities range from providing a separate testing environment whenever the student takes a test or quiz as stipulated by the IEP to providing special transportation to students who require special accommodations whenever en route to and from school. Our school provides two operating 'Testing Labs' for students who have testing within a separate setting, read aloud upon request, or read aloud everything as accommodations. Other accommodations are provided by the classroom teacher within the most appropriate school and classroom environment.
Regular education teachers can access the 'Testing Labs' by submitting a request for students to be accommodated on the dates for their tests. Please submit your requests at least 2 - 3 days in advance.
